Dr Pett is a careful scholar who checks his facts before stating them and only presents them where he has confirmed agreement to them by specialists in their particular field. Interpretation based on such facts is an individual thing but he believes that the facts themselves must only be stated as definite when confirmed from authoritative sources. There must be a careful differentiation between opinions, beliefs and interpretations, and facts. Even archaeological facts have to be interpreted. We can tell that a city was burnt. We cannot usually tell who by. That is a matter of interpretation. Nor is there usually any direct indicator of which city it was. We have to judge from other criteria, and in a place like Palestine where cities abounded that often means that we cannot be sure. That is why we often have to say ‘probably’ or ‘possibly’. Where positions are based on such interpretation we do well to hold the positions lightly until more certain facts come along. The majority will not always necessarily be proved right in the end.
